Lake King William Tunnel Tarraleah
Hydro Tasmania
Sugden & Gee were engaged in 2025 to provide Superintendent services for the construction of the Lake King William Tunnel, located at Tarraleah. The project involves excavation of a 920m long tunnel including the shotcrete, rock bolts, concrete invert and rock trap. The tunnel will partly replace an aging canal and provide increased capacity for redevelopment of the Tarraleah Hydro Power Scheme, should that proceed. The contract included multiple separable portions relating to different sections of tunnel, which added some complexity to administration for assessment of practical completion, extension of time claims etc.
Our role extended to providing Superintendent Services for the installation of the tunnel plug by a separate contract. Both contracts involved significant changes in scope requiring independent assessment of the associated time and cost variation claims. Our role was to review both claims, and the principal’s opinion (and their legal advice) in order to make an independent assessment in all cases.
